A delicious and comforting Caramel Apple Crisp featuring tart Granny Smith apples topped with a crunchy oat and pecan crumble. This recipe includes an easy homemade caramel sauce that enhances the warm baked apples, perfect for a cozy dessert.

Ingredients

Scale

For the Apple Crisp

  • 4 Granny Smith apples, peeled and thinly sliced
  • ⅓ cup gluten-free baking flour blend with binder, divided
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ¾ cup certified gluten-free old-fashioned oats
  • ⅓ cup brown sugar
  • ½ cup chopped pecans
  • Dash of salt
  • 6 tablespoons butter, cut into small pieces

For the Easy Caramel Sauce

  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • ½ cup half-and-half
  • 4 tablespoons butter
  • Dash of salt
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Easy Caramel Sauce: Add the brown sugar, half-and-half, butter, and salt into a small heavy-bottomed saucepan set over medium-low heat. Cook gently, stirring often, until the mixture thickens into a smooth caramel sauce, about 10–12 minutes. Remove from heat, stir in the vanilla extract, and let cool slightly. This sauce can be made up to 5 days in advance; reheat gently in the microwave for about 30 seconds before serving.
  2. Preheat the Oven and Prepare Baking Dish: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Lightly grease an 8×8-inch or similarly sized baking dish with nonstick spray to prevent sticking.
  3. Mix Apples with Spices and Flour: Place the peeled and thinly sliced apples in a large bowl. Toss them evenly with the cinnamon and 1 tablespoon of the gluten-free flour blend to coat the slices well.
  4. Assemble the Apples in Baking Dish: Transfer the coated apples into the prepared baking dish. Drizzle ½ cup of the prepared caramel sauce over the apples to infuse flavor and moisture.
  5. Prepare the Crisp Topping: In the same bowl used for the apples, combine the oats, brown sugar, chopped pecans, the remaining gluten-free flour, salt, and the small pieces of butter. Using your fingertips, work the mixture together until it becomes crumbly with pea-sized clumps.
  6. Add Topping and Bake: Evenly sprinkle the crisp topping mixture over the apples in the baking dish. Bake in the preheated oven for 30–40 minutes, or until the apples are tender and the caramel sauce is bubbling around the edges. If the topping begins to brown too quickly, cover loosely with foil and continue baking until done.
  7. Cool and Serve: Remove the apple crisp from the oven and let it cool for at least 20 minutes up to 1 hour. Serve warm, drizzled with additional warm caramel sauce if desired for extra indulgence.

Notes

  • The caramel sauce can be prepared several days in advance and stored in the refrigerator for up to 5 days; reheat gently before serving.
  • Use Granny Smith apples for their tartness and firmness, which hold up well during baking.
  • To keep the topping from browning too fast, loosely cover with foil during baking if necessary.
  • This recipe is gluten-free when using certified gluten-free oats and flour blend.
  • For a nut-free version, omit the pecans and substitute with additional oats or seeds.
  • Serve the crisp with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or whipped cream for an extra special treat.
