Discover how to make delicious Churro Cruffins, a delightful fusion of churros and croissants, ready in just 30 minutes. These crispy, cinnamon-sugar coated treats filled with chocolate, jam, or sweet cream cheese are perfect for a quick breakfast or dessert.

Ingredients

Scale

Pastry:

  • 1 pack Puff Pastry (store-bought or homemade)

Coating:

  • 1 tablespoon Cinnamon (for flavor)
  • 1 cup Sugar (brown sugar can be used)

Frying:

  • 23 inches Neutral Oil (canola or vegetable oil)

Fillings:

  • 1 cup Chocolate (dark or milk chocolate)
  • 1 cup Jam (favorite flavor like raspberry or strawberry)
  • 1 cup Sweet Cream Cheese (mix with a touch of vanilla)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven and prepare pastry: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Roll out the puff pastry on a lightly floured surface until it’s about 1/4 inch thick. Cut into squares or rectangles suitable for filling and rolling.
  2. Add fillings and shape: Place your desired filling (chocolate, jam, or sweet cream cheese) into the center of each pastry square. Fold the corners inward and pinch the edges well to seal the filling inside.
  3. Roll and shape into cruffins: Roll each filled pastry tightly into a cylinder. Bend each cylinder into a U-shape and place them carefully into the cups of a muffin tin to hold their shape.
  4. Heat oil for frying: Pour enough neutral oil into a deep frying pan so the cruffins will be submerged halfway. Heat the oil to 350°F (175°C), perfect for frying without absorbing excess grease.
  5. Fry the cruffins: Lower the shaped cruffins gently into the hot oil. Fry them for 3-4 minutes on each side or until they turn a beautiful golden brown color, ensuring a crispy exterior.
  6. Drain and coat with cinnamon sugar: Remove the cruffins from the oil and place them on paper towels to drain excess oil. While still hot, toss them in a mixture of cinnamon and sugar to coat thoroughly for that signature churro flavor.
  7. Serve warm: Serve the churro cruffins warm straight from the fryer for the best texture and flavor experience. Enjoy immediately for the perfect balance of crispy outside and soft, flavorful inside.

Notes

  • You can experiment with different fillings such as Nutella or fruit preserves for variety.
  • Ensure the oil temperature stays consistent at 350°F (175°C) to avoid greasy cruffins.
  • Use a slotted spoon when frying to make turning and removing easier and safer.
  • Store leftover cruffins in an airtight container and reheat in the oven to preserve crispiness.
