These Maple Donut Bars are a delightful twist on classic donuts, featuring a soft, yeast-risen dough fried or baked to golden perfection and topped with a luscious maple glaze.

Ingredients

Scale

For the Dough

  • 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 ¼ tsp active dry yeast
  • ½ cup warm milk (110°F)
  • ¼ cup granulated sugar
  • ¼ cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 2 large eggs
  • ½ tsp salt

For Frying or Baking

  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter

For the Glaze

  • ½ cup pure maple syrup
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 12 tbsp milk (for thinning, as needed)
  • ½ tsp maple extract (optional, for stronger flavor)

Instructions

  1. Activate Yeast: Combine warm milk, yeast, and a pinch of sugar. Let it sit for 5–10 minutes until foamy.
  2. Make Dough: In a large bowl, mix flour, sugar, salt, eggs, butter, and the yeast mixture. Knead for 5–7 minutes until smooth.
  3. First Rise: Cover and let the dough rise for 1–1.5 hours, or until doubled.
  4. Shape Bars: Roll out dough into a rectangle and cut into bar shapes.
  5. Second Rise: Let shaped bars rise again for 30 minutes.
  6. Cook: Frying method: Fry bars in hot oil (350°F) until golden brown, about 1 minute per side.
  7. Cooking Option: Baking method: Bake at 375°F for 10–12 minutes until lightly golden.
  8. Make Glaze: Melt butter, whisk in maple syrup, powdered sugar, and maple extract. Add milk to reach a pourable consistency.
  9. Glaze Bars: Dip warm donuts in glaze or drizzle over the top. Let set for 10 minutes.

Notes

  • Use either frying or baking method for cooking the donut bars.
  • Maple extract is optional for a stronger maple flavor in the glaze.
  • Let glaze set for best flavor absorption.
