Main Ingredients

  • 1 tablespoon Vegetable Oil (Can use canola or peanut oil as a substitute.)
  • 3 cloves Garlic (Minced.)
  • 1 small Shallot (Finely chopped.)
  • 1 pound Ground Beef (85/15.)
  • 2 tablespoons Soy Sauce (Tamari is a great gluten-free alternative.)
  • 1 tablespoon Oyster Sauce (Mushroom stir-fry sauce can be used for a vegetarian version.)
  • 1 teaspoon Brown Sugar (Honey can be an alternative.)
  • 1 tablespoon Fresh Lime Juice
  • ½ teaspoon Chili Flakes (Or minced Thai chili.)
  • 1 cup Fresh Thai Basil Leaves (Chopped.)
  • 810 sheets Rice Paper Wrappers (Can use lettuce for a low-carb option.)
  • Fresh Mint Leaves
  • Cilantro
  • Green Onion
  • Julienned Carrots
  • Cucumbers

Instructions

  1. Heat and sauté aromatics: In a skillet over medium heat, warm up 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil. Add the minced garlic and chopped shallots, sautéing for about 1 minute until fragrant and slightly golden.
  2. Brown the beef: Add in 1 pound of ground beef, breaking it up with a spatula. Cook until browned and crumbly, around 5-7 minutes.
  3. Season the beef: Stir in 2 tablespoons of soy sauce, 1 tablespoon of oyster sauce, 1 teaspoon of brown sugar, and ½ teaspoon of chili flakes. Let simmer for 2-3 minutes.
  4. Finish filling: Remove from heat and squeeze in 1 tablespoon of fresh lime juice, adding the chopped Thai basil. Mix gently and let cool slightly.
  5. Prepare wrapper: Fill a shallow bowl with warm water and set up your assembly area with rice paper wrappers and the beef mixture.
  6. Soften wrapper: Dip one rice paper wrapper into the warm water for 5-10 seconds. Lay it flat on a clean towel or board.
  7. Fill wrapper: Place a small portion of the beef filling and any optional herbs or veggies at the bottom of the wrapper.
  8. Roll up: Fold the bottom of the wrapper over the filling, tuck in the sides, and roll gently but firmly.
  9. Repeat: Repeat with the remaining wrappers and filling, placing rolls seam side down on a serving platter.
  10. Slice and serve: Slice them in half to showcase the vibrant filling inside.
