These Stuffed Cabbage Rolls are a comforting and hearty dish featuring tender cabbage leaves wrapped around a savory mixture of ground beef, rice, and aromatic seasonings, baked in a rich tomato sauce.

Ingredients

Scale

Ingredients

  • 1 large head green cabbage
  • 1 lb lean ground beef
  • 1 cup uncooked long-grain rice
  • 1 medium onion, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 24 oz tomato sauce
  • 1 tsp dried oregano
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Prepare cabbage leaves: Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Blanch about 12 cabbage leaves for 2 minutes until tender but firm. Set aside.
  2. Sauté aromatics: In a skillet, sauté diced onion in olive oil until translucent. Add minced garlic and cook for an additional minute.
  3. Mix filling: In a large bowl, combine sautéed onion with ground beef, uncooked rice, oregano, salt, and pepper.
  4. Assemble rolls: Take each cabbage leaf and place 2 tablespoons of filling at the base. Roll tightly from the bottom up after folding in the sides.
  5. Prepare sauce base: Mix tomato sauce with extra oregano, salt, and pepper in a bowl. Spread half on the bottom of a baking dish.
  6. Bake cabbage rolls: Place stuffed rolls seam-side down in the dish and pour remaining sauce over them. Cover with foil and bake at 350°F for about 60 minutes.
  7. Serve: Let cool slightly before serving; drizzle with extra sauce if desired.

Notes

  • Blanching the cabbage leaves makes them pliable for rolling without tearing.
  • Ensure the rolls are placed seam-side down to prevent unrolling during baking.
  • Letting the rolls cool slightly helps them set and makes serving easier.
