Ingredients
- 1 large head green cabbage
- 1 lb lean ground beef
- 1 cup uncooked long-grain rice
- 1 medium onion, diced
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 24 oz tomato sauce
- 1 tsp dried oregano
- Salt and pepper to taste
- Prepare cabbage leaves: Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Blanch about 12 cabbage leaves for 2 minutes until tender but firm. Set aside.
- Sauté aromatics: In a skillet, sauté diced onion in olive oil until translucent. Add minced garlic and cook for an additional minute.
- Mix filling: In a large bowl, combine sautéed onion with ground beef, uncooked rice, oregano, salt, and pepper.
- Assemble rolls: Take each cabbage leaf and place 2 tablespoons of filling at the base. Roll tightly from the bottom up after folding in the sides.
- Prepare sauce base: Mix tomato sauce with extra oregano, salt, and pepper in a bowl. Spread half on the bottom of a baking dish.
- Bake cabbage rolls: Place stuffed rolls seam-side down in the dish and pour remaining sauce over them. Cover with foil and bake at 350°F for about 60 minutes.
- Serve: Let cool slightly before serving; drizzle with extra sauce if desired.
Notes
- Blanching the cabbage leaves makes them pliable for rolling without tearing.
- Ensure the rolls are placed seam-side down to prevent unrolling during baking.
- Letting the rolls cool slightly helps them set and makes serving easier.
