Ingredients

Scale

Ingredients

  • 2 (15-ounce) cans navy beans or great northern beans, drained and rinsed
  • 1 small yellow onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 cup smoked brisket, chopped into bite-sized pieces
  • 1/4 cup molasses
  • 1/4 cup ketchup
  • 2 tablespoons yellow mustard
  • 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar, packed
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 jalapeño, seeded and finely chopped

Instructions

  1. Prepare ingredients: Chop the smoked brisket into bite-sized pieces. Finely dice the onion, mince garlic, and seed and chop the jalapeño to your preferred heat level.
  2. Sauté aromatics: Heat 1 tablespoon of oil over medium heat in a Dutch oven or heavy-bottomed saucepan. Add the onion and jalapeño, cooking until softened and translucent, about 5 minutes. Add the garlic and cook for another 30 seconds, stirring constantly.
  3. Add beans and brisket: Stir in the drained beans and chopped brisket, mixing well to combine.
  4. Make sauce: In a bowl, whisk together molasses, ketchup, yellow mustard, apple cider vinegar, brown sugar, smoked paprika, salt, and pepper until smooth.
  5. Simmer beans: Pour the sauce over the beans and brisket mixture, stirring to coat evenly. Reduce heat to low, cover partially with a lid, and simmer gently for 45 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  6. Adjust seasoning: Taste and adjust seasoning with additional salt, pepper, or vinegar if desired. If the sauce is too thick, stir in a little water or broth to loosen.
  7. Rest before serving: Turn off heat and let the beans sit covered for 10 minutes to allow flavors to meld before serving.

Notes

  • If sauce is too thick, loosen with water or broth as needed.
  • Adjust jalapeño amount for desired heat level.
  • Letting the beans rest covered before serving enhances flavor melding.
